In my work as a photographer I love meeting new families, but it's a special treat to sometimes spend the day working with friends. The little girl in these photos is one of my daughter's best friends from preschool, so it was a lot of fun hanging out at Cleveland Dam with her and her mom and dad, taking photos and capturing all of their beauty and light with my camera. What an awesome family... it was great spending some time with you guys and I can't wait to get our girls together for a play when we return from Hungary. Smooches to you all - especially on B's mushy little cheeks! Mwah!

I know I say this every time I post photos of a kid's birthday party, but I think they are one of the best occassions to hire a professional photographer. With all the decorations, presents, activities, family, friends and happy kids, it's a very photogenic day and a great opportunity to document a milestone in a child's life. This is the second time I've had the lucky opportunity to photograph this sweet boy's birthday and I'm so glad I was there. He's just a delightful little guy with a bright smile, a wonderful heart and a great love for Batman! What a fun day it was. Big hugs to you Bat Boy!

Another quick post while I'm on holidays in Hungary. We're heading to the cottage tonight where there is very limited internet access, so I will not be replying to emails with any frequency. Plus, I'm going to try something new and set up my blog to "auto post" a bunch of photos every other day or so. Now, for more photos. I just love the power of bubbles! When it comes to children, nothing will make them light up faster than some wonderful bubbles floating and popping and swirling above a open field of green, green grass. Oh, and I love the artwork behind the two boys in the first couple of shots. Isn't it great? Give me a room with colourful art on the wall and you can be certain I'll put someone in front of it for a portrait... or two...

As I take a break from my World Cup watching obsession, I thought I'd put up a quick post of this wonderful family. With their second child on the way, they gave me a call to capture the magic of pregnancy and the excitement of expecting another darling into their family. It was a very bright and sunny day out in Steveston, but still a little cold if the wind kicked up in the shade. I don't think you can tell though - with a family this loving, they look pretty warm to me!

Way back in March I met this great family for a session out at Queen Elizabeth Park. All morning we were trying to keep just one step ahead of the rainy weather, but had to run for cover at one point when a downpour hit. Despite the weather woes, everybody stayed lively thanks to the sweetheart of the family - this two-year-old little doll. And can I just say there is almost nothing cuter than a little girl in a perfect red pea coat?

I don't know why it's taken me so long to post these photos!

Perhaps it has something to do with the two weddings I shot last week? Or the million other things I've had going on? Like the rescheduling of our trip to Hungary (yes, we're going after all), or the excitement surrounding our daughter starting kindergarten in the fall (I can't believe it - she's growing so fast).

But enough excuses. I love these photos, so here they finally are.

I think Carey might be one of the most gorgeous expectant moms I've ever seen. She was absolutely glowing and I couldn't be happier for her. We had a super-terrific time taking photos in and around her home, probably in large part due to Carey's ease in front of the camera. She was a complete natural. I really think you missed your calling as a model Carey. Thanks for such a fun day and I can't wait to meet your sweet new little bundle of joy!

When the maternity photo session went so well, I knew the newborn session with this terrific family would be a breeze. And I was right. This darling little girl was calm and sleepy the entire session. What more could I ask for? Oh, and she also happened to be gorgeous!

This session was shot back in February, during the peak of the Olympics, so it was only fitting to wear a little Canadian pride... Go Canada!

This session was especially fun for me. Nicole was beaming and thrilled to be pregnant and Alan couldn't have looked at her more adoringly. What a lucky baby to have two parents (and an auntie in a giant puffy coat) who already love her so much. (Yes, her, because these photos were shot way back in freezing December and I have already shot the newborn photos of their gorgeous baby girl).

Nicole and Alan, I had such a great time with you taking these photos and I'm incredibly thrilled at the arrival of your sweet and healthy baby girl. I can't wait to see you again soon!

Another post in a flurry of blog posts today. This session was taken way back in December and oh my gravy it was cold that day, but this sweet little guy braved the freezing temperatures like a trooper. (Although I can't say the same about how I braved the suspension bridge at Lynn Canyon. The height and the swinging combined with a little slippery frost on the bridge had me shaking in my boots!)

Can I just say I LOVE this book The Snail and the Whale? If you've never read it to your little one... run out and get it! (In fact, all of Julia Donaldson's books are terrific. I especially love Charlie Cook's Favourite Book.)

I just love it when I work with clients for a second (or third or fourth) time. It so delightful to watch kids grow. When I arrived for this portrait session, I couldn't believe how much their little girl had grown. The last time I saw her she was the tiniest of newborns and now she's a sweet, sitting, smiling baby girl. And their little boy - how he has grown as well. I especially loved how adoring he was of his little sister. I had no troubles getting him to give her a hug or a snuggle. What a great family!

The other day one of my clients encouraged me to stop apologizing on my blog for being so behind on my posts, but this one definitely requires some sort of explanation for its lateness. When a Santa hat appears on a baby photo in March you can get a sense of just how behind I really am. Sorry. I contemplated waiting until next December to post these, but I really just couldn't wait that long to show you this unbelievably adorable baby. His wonderfully chubby arms and legs are the best!

I think six months is my new absolute favourite age to photograph babies. This little guy could not have been more perfect. At six months he was old enough to be alert and aware of the camera, but still young enough to not yet be crawling which equates to a bright, adorable baby who can't escape the paparazzi. Perfect! See for yourself...

Waaaaaaaaayyyyy back in September I got together with this terrific family for some photos. The mom, Tara, is a wonderful photographer in her own right so I was a little bit nervous before this session. I always figure that a fellow photographer might scrutinize my performance a little more critically. Of course, I was totally wrong about that! Tara and her family were fun and easy to work with, and as you will see below, the girls were a complete hoot...

[100] days of sweetness

I've discovered that trying to write a coherent blog post is severely impaired by the distractions caused when a 4-year-old pretends to be a giant while stomping around the house shouting "FEE-FI-FO-FUM! FEE-FI-FO-FUM!"

I'm not sure where my daughter's need to be a stomping giant came from today, but I think I'm going to blame my equally immature (albeit fun and imaginative) husband as the instigator. Shhhhhh! Mama's trying to work in here.

So, rather than type any further while my brain can't think, I'm going to get straight to the photos of this adorable beauty. These photos were made in celebration of her 100th day...

balloons [wonk wonk wonk]

For the longest time I have been wanting to do a family session involving balloons, so when my friend Jen and I set up a time to do some family photos I immediately thought they'd be game for a balloon adventure. I was pretty excited about doing some fun things with them and did all the pre-session investigative work on shooting with balloons. I analyzed (read: agonized over) colour choices, balloon size and balloon quantities. I even contemplated the length of the strings. I spent way. too. much. time. in the balloon store waffling over translucent vs. opaque vs. matte vs. glossy balloons (I think I made the poor lady in the store a little crazy) and after much indecision and consideration I finally left the balloon store with more balloons than I needed. I planned for popped balloons from accidental car door incidents, I planned for popped balloons due to random and unexpected sharp objects, I planned for popped balloons due to overheating in the hot, hot sun and I planned for popped balloons from over-playful kids.

My balloon shoot was finally going to happen and it was going to be great.

(Record scratch.)

Something I hadn't planned for?

Wind!

Yes. Wind.

Long story short, we took about five photos with the balloons before they needed to go back into the car a tangled mess. It was so windy that day it's a miracle I even got one shot with the balloons floating straight up in the air. In all of the other shots the balloons were heading in four different directions with at least one blocking someone's face in each shot. Needless to say, it didn't exactly work out with the balloons, but we still had a great time anyway. I'm sure I'll get my chance with balloons again. Anyone game? Call me to book a session!

In the meantime, please enjoy the photos below of a terrific family who I adore, including two whole shots involving balloons. Hooray!

Aren't newborn babies the sweetest, most wonderful little beings on the planet? For me, it's the itty bitty details that create the most stirring memories. The top of their head, their soft little ears, the tiny little fingernails and the perfect tiny little toes. I'm always so grateful to be welcomed into a home to capture these precious memories and delightful details with my photography.

I know this session was a while ago now, but thank you Kerri and Steve for a wonderful afternoon with your beautiful baby girl. It sure would be nice to have that sweltering heat back now that it's a cold January day!

I hope everybody is enjoying their Christmas holidays! I've had a wonderful day ignoring my emails and lounging around watching Csilla play with all of her new Christmas presents. I love the quiet moments with my family at this time of year. We float around the house doing odd little chores interspersed with long snuggles on the couch and end the day accomplishing nothing of any significance. The ease of being in each other's company with no pressing "to dos" truly lifts my spirit and puts my soul in a wonderful place.

And here's something else that really lifts my spirit... a beautiful family cherishing the blessing of a new baby boy. This little guy could not have been any sweeter. If I had bigger pockets I think I would have slipped him in one and tried to sneak him home with me.

Andrea and Doug... I hope you've had a wonderful Christmas with your new baby boy and his delightful big sister. I can't wait to see you again in the new year. xo c

I'm not sure how many times I've said this, but I love my job! It's not even like work for me. I truly enjoy creating beautiful images and capturing precious memories for families. This session was an especially great day. We took some fun shots around my client's home and then headed to Deep Cove for more photos. Although the setting was indeed beautiful, it was this family with their warm smiles and genuine love for each other that really made the beauty flow into my camera. Are these kids gorgeous, or what?

I know it was months ago, but looking at these photos today brushes away the dreary winter outside my window and reminds me how lucky we are to live where we do.

I could not have been happier when I heard my friend Karen was pregnant. I just loved the whole experience of being pregnant with our daughter Csilla, so I always live vicariously through the excitement of others when they are expecting.

I especially love maternity and newborn photography because of all the anticipation and love that comes with the arrival of a new baby. To be welcomed into a home to take photos and document this special occasion is a great honour to me and I truly enjoy every minute.

This was no exception when I had the opportunity to take photos of Karen and her husband Mike both before and after the arrival of their beautiful baby girl. Isn't she the sweetest little doll ever?

I apologize for my absence. I promise you I have not fallen off the edge of the earth. I'm still here and working hard, but I haven't had much time to get any blogging done. With the mad rush of pre-Christmas photos almost complete I'm excited about getting back to posting more regularly. I have about ten sessions I've never even blogged about. Yikes!

So on to the photos... this session below took place way back in July and I've already done the redo session since then. A redo session you ask? What's a redo session?

Well, let's just say this session didn't go exactly as planned. Not only did the baby girl here spend the night before the session teething and not sleeping (and therefore wasn't particularly in any mood for photos), but shortly after the last photo in this set was snapped, the older sister got stung by a bee!

Unbelievable.

Needless to say, the session ended right then and there.

You can say that again Ferris! I've already been back to see this family for some photos celebrating their sweet little girl's first 100-days, but I'm only just now posting the newborn photos. I guess you could say I'm a little behind, so if you're one of my clients wondering why I haven't posted the photos from your session... have no fear... they're coming. While I love to post photos on my blog, delivering photos to my client in a timely fashion is a priority so the blog often takes a back seat to good customer service. Hope you all understand!

Moving on to some super-sugary-sweet-adorableness...

Isn't this little one just the cutest thing you've ever seen? And she was such a good baby! I barely heard a peep out of her the entire session because she was so sleepy. I had a wonderful time documenting all of her newborn perfection and especially loved meeting her sweet older brother who was such a delight.

It's late and I should really be in bed, but this impulse struck me that I didn't want to go another day without making time to post these photos. This session was, in one word, AWESOME. Yes, I used all caps. Yes, I am yelling. It was that AWESOME. I have been waiting FOR-EVAH to do a session at Granville Island and it finally happened with this family. It turns out that heading to Granville Island for breakfast on Sunday mornings is somewhat of a family tradition so when I suggested the oh-so-fun-and-colourful location they were totally game. (Insert high-pitched squeal here.)

And let me tell you, the whole session did not disappoint. Not only was Granville Island as great as I had expected it to be, but the family was nicer and more terrific than I could have hoped for. I'll let the photos do the talking and you'll see what I mean... gorgeous kids, eh?

(btw - I was not playing favourites by featuring this gorgeous little girl in almost every photo here, it's just that her sweet little brother got tuckered out and crashed in his stroller for half the session. But don't worry, check the last shot for his gorgeous blue eyes!)

I can't believe that THIS little sweetheart is already one year old! I loved working with her family on our first session together last Spring and was delighted when they called me to document her first birthday. It was a great day at Maplewood Farm with a fun cowboy theme, great friends & family, yummy treats and of course, the farm itself, which was fun for all the guest to enjoy.

What a great day we had for this session! It was mild and beautiful with just enough cloud cover to tame the bright sky. And I couldn't have asked for anything more when this family showed up in perfect colours for the beachy setting. I absolutely love the way bright pink pops on a backdrop of grey stones and sand.

I should also mention how wonderful these two little girls were. The older of the two is always so sweet and full of smiles that I could just hug her like crazy. And I can't believe how much the baby has grown since I last photographed her as a newborn. What a little sweetheart.

Thanks Andrea and Alan. Your girls are absolutely precious and it was a pleasure working with you again. It's always so relaxed and easy to capture great images of your family. I can't wait for our next session!

To those of you following my blog, I promise you I did not fall into a deep, dark hole! Even with the small bit of vacation that I carved out for myself this summer, I'm still insanely busy with my photography. Not that I'm complaining, because I get to spend time with wonderful families like this one.

It was a little chilly for this session, but we made the most of it and found a pretty little spot in the park to take some photos. The day was overcast, but bright, which is actually my favourite of all shooting conditions. No pesky harsh sunshine and strong shadows to deal with, just nice, even light. Add that to a pretty patch of bright green grass and you have the recipe for some wonderful family photos.

I have to admit I was ~~a little~~ a lot nervous about shooting this birthday party. The gorgeous birthday girl's dad, Hamid Attie, is a very successful photographer here in Vancouver and has been an amazingly kind mentor to me ever since I first met him, so you can imagine how much I wanted to impress him!

Luckily, it was the perfect birthday party, with fun games, thoughtful decorations and, of course, lots of giggling kids and laughing adults - easy work for a photographer! The food was especially delicious... no wonder since Hamid's wife is in the catering biz. Oh, and did I mention that one of Hamid's clients is none other than the legendary chocolatier Thomas Haas, so the birthday girl's birthday cake masterpiece was made by Thomas himself?! Yuuuuummmmmmy. I had to stop myself at only one piece!

To Hamid and Rachel, thanks again for inviting me into your home for such a special occasion. I had a terrific time. c

I have an exciting announcement!

After thinking I would never want to photograph a wedding (bridezillas wonk wonk wonk) I have changed my mind. I guess the saying "never say never" really is true. I actually shot a couple of weddings recently and realized that it's a LOT of fun and not nearly as stressful as I thought it would be. Actually, in some ways it was much easier than taking photos of wild and wonderful toddlers, so I'm officially launching my second brand... Carolyn Egerszegi Photography for weddings, engagement and couples photography. Go me!

The name Spilled Milk is great for families and kids, but isn't quite the vibe brides and grooms are probably searching for so I've decided to use my own name - crazy Hungarian surname and all - for the new branch of my photography business.

I've just posted my first bloggable wedding (I shot another for a client who wants to keep it private), so run on over to my new blog to check it out.

Can there be such a thing as too much laughter?

I, for one, don't think so, but this family certainly tested the idea! I have never met a family who could make each other laugh like this one. As I was looking through the photos after the session, I actually worried that I didn't have enough "serious" photos to give them because all I had was image after image of everybody in fits of laughter. Luckily, the mom assured me that photos full of laughter was a good representation of her family, certainly on that day anyway.

Yowzers! Have I ever been busy. I sometimes wonder if people think I'm not posting on my blog because I have no clients, but it's just the opposite. I am incredibly busy and looking forward to a little break from sessions in August so I can catch up on all my work. Don't get me wrong... I LOVE working with families and creating great photos, but I think by August I'll be ready for a little vacation.

Before I get on with some fun photos of yet another awesome family, I'm must tell you about a wedding I shot this weekend. It was a gorgeous event and I had an amazing time capturing all the beautiful moments of the day. The groom absolutely gushed all day about how beautiful his bride was, and he was right, Jennifer looked stunning. It was an event filled with love and close family and friends laughing and having a wonderful time. Hopefully I'll have some photos ready to post in the next week or so, but until I do, please go visit my friend Buzz HERE and wish him congratulations!

Now for the photos... here's another awesome family session I did back in May that I'm finally posting now.

I love clients who suggest great ideas for photos. I always bring ideas with me, but it's especially fun when a client suggests something that I might not have thought of. This is a perfect example... I LOVE this first shot of dad jumping over his son, but I would never have suggested it because I didn't know dad could jump so high. But he can! And he did! And I was more than happy to take the picture.

The little man in THIS mama's beautiful belly made finally made his appearance and I was honored to document all of the sweet little newborn details. Aren't little babies amazing?

I especially love this first nerve wracking shot of the baby hangin' out in a piece of fabric.

Despite the fact that we had a big, comfy, soft bean bag chair about two inches below his bum I was still just about having a heart attack when I took this shot. I was so afraid he was going to slip out and fall - even with Mom, Dad and Grandma standing by just in case.

I'm happy to report there were no accidents during this session. Well, not involving the baby anyway. I did mange to fall off a footstool and almost break my brand new 17-55 f/2.8 lens (and my hip, but of course I was more worried about the lens!) Um Joe... thanks for the footstool but next time I'll remember to bring my own.

I know I say this every time I do a birthday post, but I just love taking photos at kid's birthday parties. What's not to like? Cake? Good! Ice Cream? Good! Presents? Good!*

This little guy's third birthday party was more fun than a barrel of monkeys. I especially loved the venue of Jump! Gymnastics. What a great place to have a party. The kids just loved climbing all over the equipment and playing in the ball pit and bouncing on the trampoline. I've already got my daughter excited about the idea of having her birthday party there next year which means I should probably give them a call right away!

another cherry [blossom] quest

Here's a quick little post before I dash off to pick up my daughter from preschool. It's her last day before summer break and she's very excited. I'm not quite sure why though because she loves school and doesn't quite understand that she won't be going back for the rest of the summer. I think she just wants to go to the class picnic tomorrow where I'm sure she thinks there will be lots of cupcakes and ice cream. Of course, to her, anything worth doing must involve cupcakes and ice cream. I have to admit, she's got a point.

Anyway, here are some photos of a great family who I have been looking forward to working with for quite a while. Mom is a wonderful photographer and was very keen on indulging me in a quest for awesome cherry blossom photos. As you'll see, we certainly achieved my our goal.

Oh, and once again, yes, I make my clients climb trees.

What an awesome family! I was lucky enough to capture memories with this family in the fall (HERE) and enjoyed working with them for a second time just recently. With the cherry trees out in full bloom in Stanley Park it was a perfect backdrop for some family photos... and yes, I do make my clients climb trees!

The last shot is probably my favourite from the day. Near the end of the session the sweet little boy had just about had enough of me and my camera. He was tired and had a terrible sore mouth from teething, so his mom sat him down on the blanket and gave him a nice soft fruit bar to sooth his gums with. Obviously the fruit bar was a perfect choice because he was so comforted and relieved by the chewing that he started to fall asleep sitting up. It totally was adorable and also the perfect moment for his big sister to give him a kiss. Love it!

Thanks for another great photography session Alisha and Mat. I can't wait to work with you again one day.

Wow. Two posts in one week. I am really motoring now! I've finally got my computer fixed and running smoothly so I'm happy to report that I'm almost completely caught up on my sessions. Woot! Just a few more to deliver and I can kick back and enjoy the summer. But oh wait... I still have sessions booked for every weekend and a couple of weddings to look forward to shooting so it should be a very busy summer for me!

In case you live in the Vancouver area and know someone who is dragging their feet about getting photos done (maybe it's you?), have them call me right away because I'm already fully booked through the middle of August. Now is the time to schedule a session if you want family photos made while the weather is still nice. The same goes for weddings too. I'm very interetested in expanding my business into wedding photography, so if you know anyone looking for a relaxed and affordable photographer, have them give me a shout.

Anyway... moving on to the photos. This family was great fun to spend some time with. They're old friends of mine and it's always nice to have such a relaxing session where I'm not struggling to remember everybody's names. I wish name recall was one of my strengths, but it just isn't. Sorry to all of my clients who have experienced this failing of mine first hand!

While I do not pride myself on having a good memory, I do pride myself on seeing kids with a mother's eyes and capturing their true spirit with my photography. I love to help children feel comfortable in front of my camera so they can get busy with just being themselves. Most parents flatter me after a session by telling me that their kids chattered excitedly about me after I left. I love knowing I've connected in a way that was meaningful to my clients, especially with the littlest ones who are often afraid of strangers with big black clicking boxes in front of their face. As much as I love hearing that kids ask about me after the shoot, my favourite feedback by far is when a mom tells me what Ginger did... she said that the first set of pictures below are the pure essence of her son.

I can't think of a higher compliment for what I do. So, thanks Daryn and Ginger. It was a pleasure working with you and your family. I can't wait to capture more wonderful memories with you in the future!

I loved this session! Not only was this little girl (as you'll see) beyond adorable but, after a few shots at the client's home, we moved to a location that I have been wanting to shoot at since starting my photography business. For whatever reason, I have never made it out to Whytecliff Park with a client before, so when mom Louanne suggested it I was thrilled. It's a bit of a drive to get there but it was totally worth it.

I have to admit, I was also a little intimated at the beginning of this session because the dad, Patrick, is an avid photographer, but he could not have been less intimidating about the whole thing. In the end I really enjoyed collaborating with Patrick on set-up ideas and loved the suggestions he brought to the table. It was such great fun that I can't wait to work with this family again.

I've said it before and I'll say it again... I think children's birthday parties are an excellent occasion to hire a professional photographer. You're renting the bouncy castle, you're inviting all your friends and family over, you're planning activities and you're baking a cake (or at least buying one), so why not let me capture all the excitement with photographs while you enjoy the party?

When I had a photography session with THIS amazing family last fall, the mama to these adorable twins was smart enough to book me in advance for their birthday party a few weeks ago. I am so excited about my photography business. Everything is going really well and I'm busy busy busy! It's such a thrill to get to do what I love and have such a positive response to my work.

This family is SO nice and gorgeous (as you'll see below) and I really enjoyed working with them for a second time. HERE they are on our first session. You'll notice their family has grown by one spectacular little man. Of course, the new baby has some big shoes to fill in the cuteness department because his big brother is pretty adorable too!

I just love newborn sessions, especially when the baby is such a precious doll like this little girl. Isn't she just the sweetest thing ever? I'm sure my husband absolutely hates it when I come home after a morning with a newborn like this one. I'm all gushy and cooing about babies and he's all rolling his eyes and suggesting that maybe I stick with photographing, you know, older families...

This day was nothing short of wonderful.

I must admit I was excited about this session from the minute we booked it because my "client", Stacy, is an old friend. She's a gorgeous, fun girl and I knew the familiarity I had with Stacy would really translate into the photos, but what I wasn't expecting was for Stacy's family to be as much fun as she is! It just so happened that we scheduled our session for a weekend when Stacy's whole family was in town for her dad's birthday, which was perfect because they are an incredible bunch of people. I don't think I have even one photo of Stacy's mom when she is not laughing or smiling or hugging someone. Everyone was so full of love and joy that I was incredibly inspired to look through the lens that day.
